Jonavos miesto herbas patvirtintas Lietuvos Respublikos Prezidento dekretu Nr. 1077 1996 m.  spalio 18 d.

Herbas kildinamas iš Abraomo Kulviečio, gimusio ir palaidoto Kulvoje (Jonavos raj.), giminės herbo.

LEGEND

                      There is a legend about how the town came to be named Jonava. At the ford across the River Neris below the Skaruliai area, major thoroughfares passed, including roadways heading from Kaunas to Ukmergė and from Vilnius to Kėdainiai and Kuršiai. These were gaining in importance for trade. A clever couple Jonas and Jonienė (literally, John and Mrs. John) built a tavern on the right riverbank. In no time, it was widely known.

                      All travellers found it convenient and very pleasant to stop for a vest at the John's place, especially with Mrs. John (Jonienė). A twist in the grammatical provided a name for this locale Jonava.
